15 Best Tips on What to Avoid in Las Vegas

These tips come from real travelers who have thought “Man, there were a lot of things I wish I knew before I visited Las Vegas!” Don’t make the same mistakes these previous travelers did, and guarantee the best vacation!

1. No Jaywalking

Jaywalking is not only extremely dangerous in such a busy area, but it can also get you in trouble with the law. The minimum fine for jaywalking in Las Vegas is $350- and you can’t bank on winning that money back later.

2. No Swimming in the Bellagio Fountains

It seems like every year, someone looks at that cool blue water and decides to cool off with a quick dip. However, this can also get you in trouble with the law, and injured. Moreover, the recycled water used for the Bellagio fountains is not like a swimming pool’s water.

3. No Doing Donuts on the Strip

Sure, you have your cool new rental or Slingshot and you’re ready to show it off. After all, you’re in Vegas! Actually, doing donuts on the Las Vegas Strip can get you in a heap of trouble. It also puts you and hundreds of others into harms’ way. If you lose control of the vehicle or hit another car, building, or group of pedestrians, the damage will be irreversible.

 4. Not Drinking Water.

It’s the desert- you have to drink enough water! And no, copious amounts of alcohol don’t count. In fact, alcohol will only speed the dehydration process. Visitors to the Las Vegas Strip can suffer heatstroke and dehydration symptoms as a result of not drinking enough water. We recommend carrying a water bottle or purchasing water bottles as you tour.

 5. No Buying Drinks from Men with Coolers

You’ll see them around- and buying one is not advisable, no matter how cheap the price is. You don’t know where these drinks came from, or what is truly in them. Instead, if you’re looking for a cheap drink, head to one of the pharmacies on the Strip and stock up there for a fraction of the cocktail lounge cost.

6. No Smoking Marijuana in Hotel Rooms

Marijuana is legal in Nevada and can be purchased at a variety of licensed dispensaries. However,  you can only light up at a private residence. Which means that you could end up with a $600 fine if you get caught smoking in a hotel room.

7. Do Not Underestimate the Las Vegas Heat

We mentioned heatstroke above, but it bears repeating. For those who are not used to the desert climate, this heat can really affect you. Even spending time at the pool is more than you’ll bargain for, as the concrete will sear to the touch on very hot days. Getting out of the pool will actually feel cool due to the lack of humidity, encouraging you to stay in the heat longer, but if you’re feeling any heat stroke symptoms you must get into air conditioning.

8. Do Not Forget Sunscreen

This is especially important if you plan to spend time at the pool. The Las Vegas sun is stronger than in other parts of the country, and you don’t want to suffer a burn on your first days of vacation. Instead, apply heatless tanning before arriving here, and then apply the sunblock as much as possible.

9. Do Not Drink and Drive

There are countless taxis, limousines, and rideshares to use throughout Las Vegas. Plus, due to the heat and dehydration, drinking may affect you differently here. So, even if you’ve only had one drink, consider one of these services. Or, simply walk to your destination, as much of the Las Vegas Strip is walkable.

10. Don’t Leave Drinks Unattended

We love Las Vegas, but bad things can happen anywhere. There are those who may want to take advantage of you or your guests by leaving substances in your drinks. Always keep your drinks with you, better yet with your hand over the top. And, keep an eye out for anyone in your party that may begin acting strange.

11. Don’t Wear Uncomfortable Shoes.

No matter your plans in Las Vegas, it will require a lot of walking. So, make sure that those heels are broken in and you’re practiced in wearing them before signing up for an accidental 5 mile hike in the neon lights.

12. Don’t Use the ATMs in the Casinos

These ATMs come with high convenience charges, often close to $8. Again, head to a pharmacy to get a better deal. Or, take a rideshare service off the Strip to your nearby bank. There are plenty of different branches located in Las Vegas.

13. Don’t Wander Down Side Streets Alone and/or at Night

Las Vegas is not the place for a solitary evening walk. After all, not everyone there is having the time of their lives. So, if you need a stroll, head out with a group or go to your hotel’s fitness center.

14. Don’t Try to Get a Tattoo if You’re Drunk

You’ll probably end up regretting it. Or, the tattoo artist may not be the talent you would have chosen otherwise. While you might get a good story from it, it’s just not worth the permanent mark on your skin. Alcohol also thins your blood and can make the process trickier for the tattoo artist and how you heal.

15. Watch Out for Resort Fees

You may have planned a trip to Las Vegas because the rooms were so cheap- but, when you see that final bill, your jaw may drop. Make sure you’re informed about the hefty resort fees on your personal bill. Las Vegas is notorious for squeezing in these extra amounts.
