FAQ About Getting a Tattoo in Las Vegas

Chances are you didn’t come to Las Vegas just to get a tattoo. Maybe you’re here on business, to party at one of the many bars and clubs on the Strip, or have the quintessential Las Vegas wedding. Either way, if you are planning to get a tattoo while you’re visiting, make sure you plan wisely!

When Should I Get a Tattoo in Vegas?

Getting some new ink is fun, but if you’ve done it before you also know that getting a tattoo can limit some activities while it heals. So if you’re planning on going swimming in one of the many pools in Las Vegas, be sure you schedule your tattoo appointment towards the end of your trip. New tattoos are sensitive to both water and sunlight, so if you get a tattoo on the first day of vacation, you may miss out on other activities or risk your tattoo healing improperly. You should also wear loose clothing and save your skin tight clubbing clothes for after your tattoo has healed.

How Old Do I Have To Be To Get a Tattoo in Las Vegas?

According to the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD), you must be at least 18 years of age or older to get a tattoo in Las Vegas. However, those between the ages of 14 and 18 may get a tattoo IF their legal parent or guardian is present (with proper identification and a copy of your birth certificate) or you have documentation that you have been legally emancipated.

That being said, some Las Vegas tattoo shops have their own rules about the minimum age to get a tattoo. Before you book an appointment or walk in, be sure to contact your tattoo parlor of choice to confirm their age requirements. Also note that some tattoo shops do not allow anyone under the age of 18 inside the premises.

Can I Get a Tattoo If I’ve Been Drinking or Smoking Weed?

Getting a tattoo after consuming beer or liquor is a bad idea for several reasons. One, drinking thins your blood, which can cause issues for your tattoo artist and possibly compromise your tattoo design. Even a couple of cocktails the night before your tattoo session can ultimately lead to a faded or washed out tat—yet another good reason to get a tattoo at the end of your trip and lay off the drinking for a few days prior. And of course, most obviously, not everything that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. The tattoo you want drunk may not be the same tattoo you want sober. In addition, tattoo artists have a strict no-alcohol policy (by law) and will refuse service to any patrons who show signs of impairment.

When it comes to smoking or consuming cannabis and getting a tattoo, there are no known physical risks to being high and getting tattooed. However, smoking and then getting a tattoo can still have negative consequences, like increased sensitivity to pain or increased anxiety. And again, tattoo artists will turn you away if you show up to the shop high. Long story short, visit the dispensary after your tattoo.
