Many people are surprised to learn that Las Vegas is home to many professional sports teams. The city has top-flight hockey (Golden Knights), football (Raiders), and women’s basketball (Aces) teams, as well as minor league baseball (Aviators) and soccer (Lights) teams. The latest addition to Las Vegas area sports is the Henderson Silver Knights.
To help you learn more about the newest addition to the robust Las Vegas sports scene, Things to Do in Las Vegas presents a primer on the Henderson Silver Knights.
Who Are the Henderson Silver Knights?
The Henderson Silver Knights are the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights. The team name is a mélange of its parent club’s and Nevada’s nickname of “The Silver State.”
Prior to being purchased by the Vegas Golden Knights, the team spent 18 seasons in Texas as the San Antonio Rampage. Prior to that, it spent time in Glen Falls, NY as the Adirondack Red Wings and in Norfolk, VA as the Tidewater Virginia Wings.
The team will be coached by Emanuel Viveiros, former player for the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Minnesota North Stars and former coach of the Austrian National Hockey Team.
Where Do the Henderson Silver Knights Play?
For its first two seasons in Nevada, the team is set to play at Orleans Arena, located just off the Las Vegas Strip at The Orleans Hotel and Casino. In 2022, the team will move to Lifeguard Arena, which is currently under construction in Henderson’s Water Street District.
The new stadium will be the centerpiece of the renovated Henderson Events Center. In addition to serving as the home of the Henderson Silver Nights, Lifeguard Arena will host concerts, events, peewee hockey leagues, and amateur hockey leagues.
Sounds Great! When Do They Start Playing?
Unfortunately, the 2020-2021 AHL season has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The most recent scheduled start to the season is February 5, 2021. If you’re anxiously awaiting the debut of the Henderson Silver Knights, tickets are available now. Available seats start at $30 and go up to $99. Season tickets are available for hardcore hockey fans.
